Over the last week, I have been interning at Finn Partners Europe. An internship is a position within a company for a student or trainee and is an opportunity to gain work experience and obtain new skills. An internship can be useful for many reasons; it not only looks great on your CV, but it’s an opportunity to potentially meet your future employer and get your foot on the employment ladder. However, being an intern can be both scary and intimidating, not least because you’re in a strange environment and you’re surrounded by people you don't know. Following these top 10 tips will not only help to calm your nerves, but they will ensure you get the most out of your internship: • Preparation is key: Walking into a company that you know nothing about is never going to be a good start, or give off a good impression. Before your first day as an intern, research the company; find out who you’re going to be working with and the kind of projects you could be working on. • Dress for success: First impressions in business could make or break you. If you turn up to work on your first day with your buttons undone, your shirt untucked and your shoelaces untied, it’s not going to give off a good impression. Instead, you should wear appropriate clothing that is smart and presentable. Perhaps discuss what the dress code is with your employer beforehand. • Treat it like a real job: If you don’t take the internship seriously, then the employer and employees won’t take you seriously. Also, the more you put into the internship, the more you will likely get out of it. Treat it like a real job and work hard, as you’re more likely to be remembered by the employer, which could pay off in the future. • Commitment: Be on time and, if necessary, work through your lunch breaks and stay after office hours to get the job done. Showing that you’re committed will give off a good impression and get you noticed. Prove your worth and show that you’re willing to do whatever it takes, as you could be the next permanent employee the company is looking for. • Ask questions: Asking questions is the best way to learn more about the company and the career that you would like to enter into. You’re there to learn, so ask the people working alongside you – who likely know the company and the industry inside out – as many questions as you feel you need to. The more you ask, the better. Asking questions also show employer that you would be a conscientious employee. • Push yourself: The more you do the better the internship will be, so don’t just stick to your job description. Complete the jobs you’ve been given to the best of your ability, as this will only benefit you in the long-run. • Find a mentor: Finding a mentor is important, as this will enable you to ask plenty of questions and ask how to improve, which is what an internship is all about. If you’re not allocated a mentor when you arrive, you should consider requesting one or befriend one of the permanent employees, as you can then ask them questions. • Don’t be afraid: Remember it’s an internship and no one expects you to be perfect, so just be confident and ready to learn. Also, remember that people learn best from their mistakes, so if you do make a mistake, try not to be too disheartened. • Be yourself: As well as being polite and willing to work, you should just be yourself. This will not only enable you to engage with your colleagues, it will also help you to relax and feel part of the company. • Just enjoy it: Take as much as you can from the opportunity; learn as much as you can, make new friends and don’t stress. Internships are a great way to learn new skills, and develop your understanding and knowledge of the industry you’d like to enter into. The more you enjoy it, the more you will learn. Following these tips will help to make sure you get the most out of your internship; it will not only help you to enjoy the experience, but it will show your employer that you are willing to learn.
